Perspective

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for. – Epicurus

Perspective is a funny, funny thing.

We feel so “big” in our thoughts while rushing  through everyday responsibilities. The only view of life we have is whatever is infront of our eyes at any passing moment.

I’d imagine astronauts have the best advantage of truly grasping “big”  by viewing Earth from space. Think of all those people down there, all 6 billion of them in their own thoughts, worries, and conflicts.

Or, if lucky, their joy, celebration and peace.

Being next to a mountain and watching somebody walk off into the distance really can put it into perspective.

While on the beach, I noticed an English speaking couple walking up the coastline. We smiled shyly at one another. They walked on, dipping their feet in the waves while heading toward the mountain.

I continued on my way. But as I looked back I became both alarmed and mesmerized at the contrast of human beings and a mountain.

And then I thought of the size of Earth compared to Jupiter and Jupiter to the sun and the sun to the Milky Way galaxy. And yet to Universe standards, our beautiful Milky Way galaxy is a speck of cosmic dust on a needlepoint.

One thought could comfort my annoyance in my inability to wrap my brain around “big”.

We are all our own walking galaxies; every star our thought.

  • For, like frail leaves on trees, the state of man is ever changing. Homer, Iliad.

    • Hi Virgil! Well said, and gives us so much more to think about. Thinking about picking up the Iliad and giving it another read now. 🙂
